Signing in and creating an account

Sign in, sign up with your email address, and what to do if you are locked out.

You need an account to use KRISID. This page covers signing in, making your own account, accepting an invitation, and what to do if you cannot get in.

  1. Open the address your administrator gave you.
  2. In Email address or username, type your email address if you created your own account, or the username your administrator gave you if they set you up.
  3. Type your Password and press Sign in (or Enter).

If the details are wrong, the screen says That username and password do not go together. It does not say which of the two was wrong — on purpose, so that nobody can use the sign-in screen to find out who has an account here.

There is one case where it says more, because it can do so safely. If you signed up and have not yet followed the link in the email, you do not have an account yet, and your correct password would otherwise get you the sentence above — which reads as "you typed your password wrong" when you did not. So when the password you give matches the sign-up you are waiting on, the screen says so instead:

Your account is not finished yet: the email we sent to you@example.com has a link in it, and following that link is what makes the account. Look in that inbox — the spam folder too — and open it.

If that sign-up is more than 24 hours old its link has expired, and the screen tells you to create the account again. Neither message appears for a wrong password, so nothing is given away to somebody guessing.

Create an account

Your organisation may let people make their own accounts. The link is always on the sign-in screen, whether or not sign-up is switched on.

  1. On the sign-in screen, under New here?, click Create an account.
  2. Fill in Your name, your work email address, a password of at least ten characters, and the same password again.
  3. Press Create account.
  4. On Check your email, note the address KRISID sent the message to.
  5. Open the email and follow its link.
  6. On the page that opens, press Confirm and sign in.

You are signed in, and your email address is your username from now on.

A few rules apply:

  • Nothing is made until you confirm. Your account exists only once you press Confirm and sign in. Until then, trying to sign in tells you to go and open the email — see above.
  • The link lasts 24 hours and works once. If you sign up again with the same address, the older link stops working.
  • Only some email addresses can sign up. Your administrator chooses which email domains may. An address at any other domain is refused with a message naming that domain.
  • You get the role your administrator chose. Usually that is Viewer, which lets you read the whole repository and save your own searches, but not edit anything. Ask your administrator if you need more.
  • Ask again in ten minutes, not sooner. If no email arrives, look in your junk mail first. A second request within ten minutes sends nothing.

Note: If you already have an account, signing up again sends an email that says so and tells you how to sign in. The screen looks the same either way.

If sign-up is closed

If sign-up is not switched on, Create an account leads to a page saying so, with no form. Ask whoever runs the repository to invite you instead. Sign-up stays closed until an administrator has set up the mail server and chosen which email domains may sign up.

Accept an invitation

An administrator can add you by hand and send you an invitation link.

  1. Open the link from your invitation.
  2. The page greets you by name and shows your username.
  3. Type a password of at least ten characters, then the same again.
  4. Press Set it and sign in.

Invitation links work once and expire after three days. If yours has expired, the page says That link is no good. Ask the person who invited you for a new one.

Forgotten your password

KRISID has no self-service password reset. Ask whoever runs the repository to send you a link to set a new one. It is the same kind of link as an invitation: follow it, set a password and press Set it and sign in.

Change your password

  1. Click your name at the top right.
  2. Choose Change password.
  3. Type your current password, then a new one of at least ten characters, twice.
  4. Press Change it.

Changing your password signs your account out everywhere else it is signed in. The browser you are using stays signed in.

Sign out

  1. Click your name at the top right.
  2. Choose Sign out.

Good to know

  • If you leave KRISID unused for a long time, your session ends. Sign in again to carry on. See Troubleshooting and FAQ.
  • Your password is stored only in a form that cannot be read back, so nobody else can see it, including your administrator.
