For everyone

Finding your way around

The top bar, the sidebar, Ask, and the Help button you just pressed.

Every KRISID screen has the same frame: a bar across the top, a sidebar on the left, and the screen you are working on in the middle. This page explains each part so you always know where to go next.

The top bar

From left to right:

  • Your organisation's name or logo. Your administrator sets it, so it may not say KRISID.
  • View as somebody else, in the menu behind your name, only if you are allowed to use it. Choose a person to see the repository exactly as they see it. While you do, a banner across the top says whose eyes you are looking through and that nothing can be changed. Press Back to myself in the banner to go back to being yourself.
  • Your name, with your initials. Click it to open a short menu: Your details (your roles, teams and what you are responsible for), Change password and Sign out. Press Esc or click anywhere else to close it.
  • The Help button, at the top right. See Get help for this screen, below.

The corner at the top right says who this copy is licensed to. Press it and a small panel gives the schema version, the product version, the licence's state, expiry and hosts, and KRISID's address, contact@krisid.com — quote the panel when you write.

The sidebar

The sidebar lists everything you can open. Its parts, from the top:

  • Ask, above everything else. It is the way in when you are not sure where something is.
  • Overview: The whole repository, one entry per grouping such as By Data Domain, and Load from Excel.
  • One group per type group from your metamodel, for example Business and Physical. Each entry is a kind of thing, named in the plural. A small square marks a harvested type. How many of each there are is on the overview and on each list, not in the sidebar. The group that holds the physical estate also starts with Browse the physical estate, which shows sources, databases, schemas and tables as they are nested. Other groups whose types nest, such as Logical, start with their own, for example Browse the logical estate.
  • Governance: Change requests and Workflows. Deciding a change is everyday work for a steward, so it sits on its own rather than inside Administration.
  • Administration: Metamodel, People and Persona, Sources, Semantic model, Email, Connections, Appearance, Logs and, for whoever may read it, Usage.

Your repository's groups and type names come from its metamodel, so they may differ from these.

Open and close groups

Click a group's heading to collapse or expand it. KRISID remembers which groups you closed, in this browser. A group that holds the screen you are on always opens itself.

Collapse the sidebar to icons

  1. Click the button at the top of the sidebar, beside Browse. Its tooltip reads Collapse the sidebar to icons.

The sidebar shrinks to a narrow strip of icons, which leaves more room for wide tables and diagrams. Point at a group's icon to see its entries in a small panel. Click the icon to keep the panel open, and press Esc to close it. To bring the full sidebar back, click the same button again (Widen the sidebar). This choice is also remembered in this browser.

Ask

Ask at the top of the sidebar opens one box for searching and for asking questions in plain words. It behaves in two ways:

  • From any other screen, Ask brings back the search you were last doing, so you can open a result and return to your list.
  • When you are already on the Ask page, Ask starts a new search.

Press / from anywhere to jump straight to the Ask box. See Ask: search and questions.

Overview

The whole repository shows how big your repository is: counts of Assets, Attribute values, Relations, Asset types and Relation types. It also lists Mandatory fields with no value, which shows where required information is still missing.

By Data Domain lists each domain with everything it answers for, including what sits inside the things it owns, counted by type. Press a count to open those assets. See Browsing by domain and by type.

Get help for this screen

A Help button at the top right opens the help page about the screen you are on. On an asset it opens Reading an asset, and on a lineage picture it opens Lineage and connections. From any help page, Help home goes back to the start.

Good to know

  • Every screen has its own address. The browser's back and forward buttons work, and you can bookmark a screen or paste its address to a colleague. On Ask, the address includes your question and how you narrowed it.
  • The browser tab shows the name of what you are looking at, such as the asset's name or your question, so you can tell several open tabs apart.
  • If a button you expect is missing, check whether you are viewing as somebody else. The banner at the top tells you.
  • Every table sorts when you click a heading and filters with the box under each heading. See Sort and filter any table.
