Appearance and Ask examples
Your name and logo, the top bar, and the questions under the Ask box.
On this page
You can make KRISID carry your organisation's name and logo instead of the vendor's, and choose the example questions people see under the Ask box. None of this needs a new release. It is all settings.
Before you start
- Everything is on Administration → Appearance.
- To change anything you need Manage users and roles (ACCESS_MANAGE), the same permission that controls the mail server. Without it, the screen says You may read this but not change it. and every control is disabled.
Upload a logo
The logo appears in the top-left corner of every screen, including the sign-in screen.
- Under The logo, choose a file.
- Press Upload.
The file must be a PNG, JPEG, GIF or WEBP image under 512 KB.
SVG files are refused. An SVG can carry script, and because the logo is served from KRISID's own address, that script would run as whoever is signed in. Export your logo as a PNG instead.
Two previews sit side by side. the file itself is shown on a checked background, so you can see if a "transparent" image has a white box around it. as it appears in the top-left shows it on the top bar's real colour.
To prepare a logo that looks sharp:
- Crop it to the mark before you upload it. The corner scales the whole file to fit, empty space included, so a wide margin makes the mark itself small.
- Export it about three times the size it will be shown, around 600 px wide for a word mark, so it stays sharp on high-resolution screens.
If the file is mostly empty space, KRISID says so under the previews, shows how much bigger the mark would be trimmed, and offers Trim it. That crops the file to the mark and uploads the trimmed copy for you.
To go back to the name in text, press Remove.
Choose a dark or light top bar
The top bar is dark by default. A logo drawn in a dark colour, like most company navy, disappears into it.
Under The top bar, choose:
- Dark: the default. Suits a white or light logo.
- Light: a pale bar with dark type. Suits a dark logo.
The choice in use is marked in use. Nothing else on any screen changes.
Set the word mark
The word mark is the name shown in the top-left when there is no logo. Screen readers also read it out as the logo's description, so set it even if you use a logo.
- Under The word mark, type the name. It can be up to 40 characters.
- Press Save.
Choose the example questions on Ask
The Ask page offers a few questions to click, to show newcomers what they can ask. You can write your own, so the first ones people see are about your data.
- Under Example questions on Ask, type one question per line. You can write up to twelve.
- Press Save questions.
Your questions come first, before any that KRISID makes from the repository. KRISID runs each one when you save:
- If every question finds something, it says Saved. Every one of them answers.
- If any question finds nothing today, KRISID names it. It is shown anyway, because you may be ahead of the repository. A question about data that hasn't been loaded yet will start working once it is loaded.
The rest of the list is filled with questions KRISID makes from the repository, for example who owns something or where a term is stored. Each one is run before it is shown, and one that doesn't answer is left out. Leave the box empty to show only these.
Tip: The best examples use your own words: a real domain, a real classification, a product people know. See What Ask understands for the kinds of question that work.
Good to know
- The name and logo also appear on the sign-in screen, before anybody has signed in.
- The logo and the top bar go together. If your logo disappears into the bar, you can switch to the light bar. You don't have to redraw the logo.
