For everyone

Your first ten minutes

Sign in, ask a question, open an answer, follow its lineage.

This tour takes you from signing in to following a table's lineage. Ten minutes is enough to learn the moves you will use every day.

Before you start

  1. Open the address your administrator gave you.
  2. Type your Email address or username and your Password.
  3. Press Sign in.

KRISID opens on the Ask page.

Look at the Ask page

Ask is the front door. The heading reads What are you looking for?, and the box under it already has the cursor in it. Below the box you will see:

  • Try: a few questions to click. Each one has been checked to give an answer in your repository.
  • Browse by Data Domain: one card per domain, with how many assets it answers for.
  • Browse by type: the kinds of thing in your repository, with counts.
  • Recently viewed and Saved searches, on the right. Both are empty on your first visit.

Your repository may use other words than Data Domain. The page uses whatever your metamodel calls them.

Ask your first question

  1. Under Try, click any question.
  2. Read the sentence above the results. It starts with Showing and says how KRISID understood the question, for example Showing Tables in Banking & Financial Services marked Contains PII · 2 results.
  3. Look at the rail on the left, headed Narrow to. It counts everything that matched, by kind of thing and then by domain. Click a row to narrow to it, and click Everything to widen again.

Each part of the sentence has a ✕. Click it to take that part off and see the wider answer. If KRISID read your words in a way you did not mean, click just the words instead to search for the words alone.

Tip: You do not have to press Enter. Results change as you type.

Open the best match

When one result is clearly the answer, KRISID shows it first in a card labelled Best match, with its definition and a few facts about it, such as the table that realises it.

  1. Type a single name you know, such as the name of a table or a business term.
  2. If a Best match card appears, press Open. If not, click the first result.

You are now on the asset's own page: its definition, its attributes, who is responsible for it and what it links to. Reading an asset explains each part.

Follow the lineage

  1. On the asset's page, under Trace it, click Lineage and connections. (On a Best match card, the same picture is behind Lineage.)
  2. Read the picture: where this asset's data comes from, and where it goes.
  3. Use View and Direction above the picture to change what it shows. Direction offers Both ways, Upstream only and Downstream only.

Many assets move no data at all. A domain or a business term owns, holds or means data, but nothing flows through it. For these, KRISID shows Connections instead and says so: Nothing flows in or out of this one. See Lineage and connections.

To go back, click ← back to the asset.

  1. Click Ask at the top of the sidebar.

Your last search comes back as you left it, with the same question, narrowing and results. This is on purpose, so opening a result never loses your place.

  1. Press New search beside the box.

The box empties and the front of the Ask page returns. Pressing Esc in the box does the same, and so does clicking Ask in the sidebar while you are already on the Ask page.

Good to know

  • Press / from any screen to jump to the Ask box.
  • Results labelled demo data are invented examples. They always come last.
  • If a question finds nothing, KRISID offers the nearest answers it has, each one click away.
